Watercolor Papers: 4 Go-To Options from Classic to Versatile

Hi friends! 🌿🎨 Today, I'm sharing the 4 watercolor papers I have on rotation in my studio. As someone who's constantly chasing that perfect watercolor effect on paper, I've tried my fair share of surfaces. So, let's chat about the 4 papers that have stolen my heart and my paintbrush.

1. Arches Cold Pressed 140 lb - The Classic Charmer

Oh, Arches! If watercolor paper could wear a tuxedo, this would be it. It's classy, reliable, and always ready for a black-tie affair (or in our case, a painting session).

What I love:
• That dreamy texture! It's like painting on a cloud (if clouds were, you know, flat and paper-like)
• Tough as nails - I can scrub, lift, and layer without fear
• Colors pop like no other (esp when prepped)
• It ages beautifully (seriously, this paper will outlive us all)

What might make you pause:
• It's a bit pricey (but oh so worth it)
• Beginners might find it intimidating (it's like using a Ferrari for driver's ed)
• Not ideal for mixed media extravaganzas

2. Canson XL Watercolor Paper - The Everyday Hero

This paper is like your favorite comfy sweater - reliable, comfortable, and perfect for everyday use.

What I adore:
• Budget-friendly (your wallet will thank you)
• Great for practice and experimenting (go wild!)
• Plays nice with both wet and dry media
• Easy to find (it's probably at your local art store right now)

The not-so-great bits:
• Might buckle a bit with heavy washes (it's trying its best, okay?)
• Not as tough as its pricier competitor Arches
• Color lifting can be a bit tricky

3. Canson Mixed Media XL - The Versatile Virtuoso

This paper is like that friend who's good at everything. Annoying in real life, but fantastic in paper form!

Why it's awesome:
• Jack of all trades - watercolor, pencil, ink, you name it!
• Smooth operator - great for detailed work
• Sturdy enough for light washes
• Bright white surface makes colors sing

The downsides:
• Not a watercolor specialist (jack of all trades, master of none)
• Might not handle super wet techniques well
• Lacks that classic watercolor paper texture some artists crave

4. Fabriano Mixed Media Pad - The Versatile Performer

Ah, Fabriano! It's like the Swiss Army knife of the paper world. Ready for any artistic challenge!

What's fantastic about it:

• Versatile surface that welcomes various media with open arms
• Pleasing texture that's just right (not too smooth, not too rough
• Eco-friendly production (Mother Nature approves!)
• Bright white surface that makes colors pop brilliantly

The potential pitfalls:

• Might get a bit unsteady with very heavy washes
• Not as common as some other brands (can be tricky to find)
• A bit pricier than some mixed media options

So there you have it! Arches is my go-to for those "frame-worthy" pieces. Canson XL Watercolor is my runner up. Canson Mixed Media XL and Fabriano are there when I'm feeling experimental and I want to fill a lot of pages fast - we use these two papers in my in-person workshops all the time!

Remember, finding your perfect paper is like finding the perfect dance partner - it takes practice, patience, and a willingness to step on a few toes along the way.
Go experiment, and find the paper that makes your brush want to dance!
